failsafe/cruise control
Yesterday, while driving, my rear lights message came on while stopping. As soon as I took off (foot off the brake) the message went away. It did this twice before I got on the Interstate. After reaching my desired speed, I engaged the cruise. Within less than a minute, the failsafe light came on and the cruise disengaged. The light on the console was out. This didn't affect anything - ran as usual. Upon stopping, I shut the car off and restarted. The failsafe light was off and cruise control light was back on. I tried the cruise again on the way home and it repeated the problem again. Reading posts, I'm wondering if it may be the brake light switch. I would appreciate a response from anyone familiar with this scenario. By the way, rear lights message did not come on again after the two times.

Yes, the rear light message has been associated with the brake switch. I had a similar problem in that I only got the message when the cruise switch was 'up/on'. Never when the switch was 'down/off'.
^ +1 likely the brake pedal switch. I had the same problem. I sprayed a light amount of WD-40 (should use electrical contact cleaner) on the part that contacts the brake pedal to fix it. I did not need to replace or open the brake switch.
As the switch is difficult to replace try spraying it first
