Are the front and rear fog lights supposed to turn on if on auto and raining?

Are the front and rear fog lights supposed to turn on if on auto and raining?
I am not sure if this was some electrical glitch or what but it was a rainy day and I noticed both of those lights turned on by themselves when I turned on the car. The switch was on auto but they never turned on before until this one rainy day. Is that normal? Thanks
