Default Gearbox problem - 1998 XJR

Hi! I have an issue with my gearbox... today when hade the car on idle a couple of minuets, later when I was about to drive it was impossible to get the stick in D.. it was stuck in P. I had tried to hit the breaks a couple of times and to restart the car but the problem remains. What to do?

First thing I'd check is the brake switch; when you step on the brake, do you hear a 'click' from the shift lever area? It's part of the nannny-state-mandated 'You have to step on the brake before we'll let you move the tranny out of park' circuit.

Alternatively, if your switch doesn't work, there is a procedure in the owner's manual that tells you how to manually release the lever: requires that you remove the star-headed fitting at the upper left hand side of the face of the J gate, and gently use your spare key, I believe, to release the lock.
