Default Head Lights only work on Auto

My headlight switch only turns on lights when in the (last) auto on position.
Nothing ,clearance, parking ,do not illuminate in other positions.
1998 XJ8 It had an HD conversion when I purchased. Transformers and all are wired and strapped in nicely. Problem is on a bright day lights still go out even when adjustment is at maximum. Where would be a place to start looking for the problem. Have thought about covering sensor on mirror with black tape or something.
Thanks.

My headlights DON'T work on AUTO -- I was told to check the stalk wiring (turn signal stalk) but decided to just let it go for now. Maybe you have faulty wiring in the stalk?

There are a lot of wires going in/out of the stalk. One may have broken at a solder joint. I was going to replace my stalk due to my rear taillights and radio backlights not turning on (odd mix, I know) when the headlights were on. I took the wheel off and the covers over the column and found the broken wire (green in my case). A little resolder and it worked fine.
I'd poke around there a little before you get too far into troubleshooting.
