This worked for me.

1998 and 1999 XJ8
KEYLESS REMOTE PROGRAMMING
1.Note that all remote transmitters that belong to the vehicle to be serviced must be available; all previous transmitter codes will be overwritten.
2.Hold high beam flasher back.
3.Insert the key in the ignition and turn it to “on” or to the first position.
4.Flash high beams 4 times.
5.Vehicle security locking control module will enter the learn mode. This will be confirmed by beeps from the alarm and flashing light on the shifter.
6.You can program up to 5 transmitters by pressing the lock OR unlock button once on each transmitter to be programmed. The alarm will sound once after the transmitter button is pushed.
7.The alarm must sound 5 times to complete the learning process. If you are only programming 1 transmitter you must program that first remote 5 times. If programming 2 transmitters program the first one 2 times and the second 3 times if you are programming 5 transmitters, program each transmitter one time.

I would check that the battery(ies) in the remote are OK. Do not press any buttons on the remote when the battery is removed - I believe this scrambles the remote.
I had to go through the sequence (above) exactly to get the remotes (2) to work.
It may pay to take the remotes to your local agent to have them checked.

Wish you luck.

Default I just did mine...special trick

This sounds stupid but when I did mine, I had the fob in my hand and the key in the ignition. I got all of the lights and beeps but when I was done the fob still didn't work.

The fix...

PULL THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION

I couldn't use the fob until I took out the key I felt stupid...for a second...

If taking the key out don't work, have a look at the barrel. There is a little flap ( dust shield ) that should close off where the key goes in. Sometimes this sticks open and the car thinks the key is in the ignition and has the same effect. A little drop of WD40 and work the key in and out a few times normally works.

You have to open the trunk by using the master key (black key) go get it out of Valet mode.

How can I get out from valet mode if my key fob is locked in the trunk by accident, my driver door is open but my keys are in the trunk.

I think there are three options.

In no particular order.....

1) Go to your local Jaguar dealer, give them your vin/proof of ownership etc, and they should be able to cut a key that will open your trunk. It will not have a chip so will not start the car, but you will be able to retrieve your key and remote that are locked in the trunk.

2) I've read that by grinding the tip of the green Valet key down, it will open the trunk. It will no longer work as a valet key, but you will be able to get into the trunk.
Item #5 in this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...y-trunk-67757/

3) Remove the rear license plate, and either drill a hole into the trunk, or with a flashlight and screwdriver attempt to access the mechanism through the two elongated slots. Some people have been successful....................check out this thread........

And then, of course, what you do when you get the trunk open is go to the Jag dealership and buy two more keys with fobs to avoid this happening in the future.

KC, I'm pretty sure he cannot program a remote using only the Valet key.

(But a good post for future referencing)

If you can get into the car ("as the driver's door is open") isn't there another option?

Not if the car is in "Valet" mode, which it is.

Valet mode is so that a valet cannot access the trunk/boot. The only way then to access the trunk is to use the black "driver" key, or take it out of valet mode, again by using the black "driver" key............and in rf69's case his only black key is currently located in the locked trunk!
