Any tips on removing the base for the hood ornament?

I'll also need a spring and retainer.

I assume it comes together.

1. open the hood.
2. Unscrew the big nylon nut holding the base on.
3. Remove base.

You are correct; the leaper has a cable which threads through the base, a spring, and then a washer to be captured by a crimp fitting that holds the whole thing together.

Plenty of hood ornaments available on Ebay for a reasonable price. Or, spend the big $$$ at the dealer. But, I'm thinking that the 'bay is a more reasonable choice for you.

 

I would also add a heat gun to soften up the double sided tape between the hood and the base. Then take some fishing line or dental floss and carefully work it off.
