I'm putting my XJR back together and I was about to reinstall the intake throttle body elbow and EGR valve when i noticed a significant amount of carbon build up both in the EGR and in the intake elbow where the EGR bolts to it. It's pretty hard and caked on black stuff that I couldn't even seem to chip away at. Does anyone have a good method for cleaing this and the EGR?
Thanks.

I ultrasonicly clean all my parts and hot bathed some others. Both methods worked wonders. I also sandblasted the outside of the throttle elbow and not the inside where air travels. You don’t want to blast anything inside as the media embeds itself. LAs totally awesome cleaner is cheap and cuts through carbon even more if it’s heated. A dremel helps too.

A dremel with the wire brush attachments did the trick. Don't think I really need to do the ultra sonic cleaning. I'm just trying to get this car back on the road, not building a show car.

My XJ308 (3.2l) failed the emission tests here which wasn‘t very comforting. However there are a few things to consider before I give up on the car. As both left and right exhausts were measured to be over 1.0 CO value the problem might be central. This leads me to the EGR and looking at the photos here, it could be the problem. I would like to know where this device is and does the ECU actually send warnings to the driver via the display reporting the problem?
Earlier in the year I had a warning msg reporting the sensor on the 2nd bank is faulty. This went away after a long trip one weekend. I have already bought lambda sensors thinking I might have to replace them but, a local expert reckoned he has never had to change them.
What do you think?
until next time
