I have a 2000 XJ8 my question is about the shifter also known as the J Gate. Is there a back light under the shift plate? What I have is whatever gear I'm in lights up red. Seems pretty dark. So is there some other light under the plate that maybe lights up th whole plate? Thanks.

 

The J-gate is supposed to be backlit. The bulbs are easy to replace if you have basic soldering skills. The trycky part is to disconnect the circuit board from the car. The connector is hard to reach.

Just did this job myself. That write up sure does over-complicate it. The main thing is that the j-gate multi-plug is kind of hidden, to the left. DO NOT attempt to unplug the white connector that you can see at the front of the j-gate. This is soldered in.

The bulbs that backlight the shifter (there are two), and the ones in the cruise and sport mode buttons, are the same. Are they out too? Mine were.

Radio Shack sell the bulbs for $2.49 each, or you can get 560-8097 from Mouser for 81 cents, plus postage, but 4 bulbs will pay for the postage.
