Hi all new to forum I have a 1998 xj8 3.2 love the car but seems to have a loss off compression . I have almost completed what I think the problem . Thanks to this forum I removed my spark plugs today and put a small amount of oil in . I have replaced spark plugs and fully charged battery . Tried to complete as advised to put pedal to floor and start for 10 seconds then switch off then with foot still on pedal completed this 4 times in total . But had to stop to reboots battery . Whilst doing this I did notice an extra sound from engine from inside the engine. However I did notice the smell of petrol but I thought following this process it shuts the fuel feed off.
maybe some one may suggest what I have missed . The car didn’t start yet.

How much oil did you put in each cylinder?what kind was it?with cylinder wash I still had 35psi my problem is I always put too much oil i them ..then smoke up the hood afterward
Hi
it has been working perfect I only left it for a day then it just wouldn’t turn over.
I shall go out today to try to rebuild the compression but not sure of the next move. When I tried yesterday after putting the pedal to the floor it did feel like it was trying to start . But after doing the foot to the floor and trying to start it the battery started to loose power. On this forum I followed the instruction to put pedal to floor then try to stat it for 10 seconds . Then turn of for seconds still keeping foot on pedal to the floor . Then turn it over again . After 4 attempts it still didn’t spark. Should I have done something else.

If it kinda wanted start then there is spark and fuel. I guess that the flood clear function is only on US models. When there is very common issue with hydraylic lifters called sticking liftter then there is no compression in the partically cylinder or in all of them. This goes away with engine preheater and just starting it up with at least half throttle. Without engine pre heat it just takes more time. If there is any wrong noise coming from the engine during starting. Then find the noise source first.
Hi Vauxhi
cheers for the info I had jaguar mechanic over last week he nearly had it started and suggested new spark plugs . I have orded them them NGK plugs are being fitted this week . He did tell me he thinks the injectors are giving to much fuel. So we will see this week.
I cannot emphasize this enough... I’d highly suggest getting a new battery and if need be while cranking the engine over, either have a large battery charger on it or jumper cables from another vehicle that is already running. The more amps you can throw at *WHILE CRANKING ONLY* is the secret. The faster your engine spins over, the more likely and more sooner your engine will be running. I personally never use the oil in the cylinders method but, some people swear by it. I floor the gas pedal and crank 10-15 seconds. I turn the key off for 10-15 seconds. Foot to floor and crank 10-15 seconds and turn key off for 10-15 seconds. I do this method about 10 times to 1) clear out any remaining fuel in the cylinders and 2) to heat up the piston rings to help expand them out towards the cylinder walls. After the tenth time of this method, with foot off the gas pedal, I cycle the ignition key about 3 times to build up fuel pressure. I would then crank the engine with foot OFF the gas and see if it starts. This is just my method and it works for me.
I purchased a new battery and the car was trying really hard to turn but I have decided to get new spark plugs as the previous owner has told me in his ten years of owning it he has never changed therm .or the battery . I hope it does start as the interior and body work is in perfect condition .
