new member introduction from SC
I just did an oil change (6 qts of Mobil 1 5W30) and put a new NAPA Gold 1228 filter. Old Oil looked good and will be sending a sample to Blackstone labs for analysis. The earliest I can trace an oil change is sometime in summer of 2013 about 5k miles ago. Blackstone usually gives me a good insight to I'm dealing with.
Another filter option, and one I leverage is Mobile 1 M1-213 filter. 99.6% filter efficiency claim. Good construction. Only one I trust on mine.
I took the supercharger belt off and started the car. Ticking noise still there.
Took a stethoscope and listened closely where the ticking sound is coming from. Good news! It's not from the front of the valve covers. It's sounds actually like an injector 2nd one on the passenger side from the firewall.
I also called previous service locations I was able to find on the Carfax. Go5 some good information but nothing on serious mechanicals. The chain tensioners might still be the original ones so I will be pulling the valve covers this week end.
July 2nd update:
After removing the drivers side valve cover, I found out the car had been updated with the latest type chain tensioner!
While in there I checked the valve clearance and all tested within specs (0.008" for intake and 0.010" for exhaust) one of the cam lobes tip seemed to have run hotter than the other ones but nothing visible on the shim and clearance was good as well. I took a picture of that cam lobe but doesn't show well on the picture.
I also found the 2 middle spark plugs a bit on the loose end. I was hoping this would fix the ticking but it didn't (ticking is still there).
I also turned the camshaft while listening very closely for any valvetrain noise but none manifested. I ended up putting back everything together and swapped coils but the ticking noise is still there, not more nor less loud. Still RPM related. I added 8 cylinder Restore and drove but noise hasn't quiet down.
With a stethoscope I can hear the ticking most on the 2 most rearward injectors on the driver side. But I don't have good access to remove the injector plug. Any tips or advice?
