Default New UK Member requesting Advice on Daimler Super V8 please!

Hi all!

My name is Mitch, and my online handles are either Lunar Wolf, or Pil Sung. (Long stories!!)

Although i'm new to this site, i am not new to Jaguars or Daimlers, nor to forums!

I'm sure we will find out more about each other soon, but as it happens, i need some urgent advice for you guys who are able and willing to help!

I am about to embark on the purchase of a 2001 Daimler Super V8 LWB to add to my garage collection.

Although it's done nigh on 160,000 miles, it has full Guy Salmon Service History at the right intervals, and seems to be a great buy.

Is there anything i need to check specifically to these vehicles?

I am aware of the usual struts / rear auto-levelling pipes etc, but not much else.

I've also heard rumours about the windscreens rotting from the inside out. How devastating is this?
The reason i ask is because the ONLY visible imperfection is a halfpenny-sized blister on the bottom left hand corner of the rear windscreen. (photo's to follow if the dealer complies).

The car's advert can be viewed Daimler Super V8 LWB 4.0 Supercharged For Sale (2001) on Car And Classic UK.

Incidentally, the main picture looks as if the bonnet line doesn't match up.... It does. The photo was taken with the pull lever popped!

Does the issue of the aircon-rotting doors still occur on this age of vehicle too?
all assistance GREATLY appreciated!

In summary, i need info on....
  • Any vehicle-specific "look out fors"
  • Windscreen rotting info
  • aircon door rotting info
  • anything else
I look forward to chatting with you all in due course.

Mitch.

Hi, I'm a 'Mitch' too !

You will be better posting in the X308 forum, as your car is one of these even if it's a crinkle-cut. AFAIK, this model series was not so renowned for rust as its predecessors. Main thing is the engine, especially the upper timing chain tensioners. If the car has done 160k, then Nikasil is not an issue.

And what are "aircon rotting doors" ? First I have heard this expression.

Thanks, Mitch!
And done!

Re the doors, i was informed by a reputable source, (a Jaguar service tech), that many of the daimlers routed the aircon flow through the doors, and thus tended to leave water droplets inside the door, thus rotting (eventually) the doors, from the inside out! I guess that's why we have forums so we can check!

Mitch, I've moved your thread over to the X308 section.

Mitchum.
I'm in california so rotting is not an issue here but your reputable source is wrong as far that the X308 is concerned. No ventilation through the doors.

Just need to find somewhere to remap her now! LoL
Thanks for all the help guys!

A car with that mileage will inevitably need a few jobs doing, although previous owners should have done a few by now just to keep the car roadworthy. I am sure you'll have a lot of fun with it. Louis, my mechanic, has just bought a Jaguar V8 with similar miles, and it is in superb condition.

One nuisance job is the rear bumper mounts; being Mazak alloy, they eventually fall to bits and the bumper can fall off if not detected in time. Cheap to replace though.

Sorry to add to this, Mitch (still feels weird saying that!!!), but there was ONE previous owner. A Surgeon. The car is practically untouched inside! The "desk" on the back of the front seats still even had their polystyrene transit tape in!!!!
he must have had a REALLY little *****!!!! LoL

A couple of bits need attention, like the bubbling on the rear windscreen and a front pillar, but not disastrous. The engine was almost silent and had no hesitation! If i keep it as well as i hope to, as i do all my vehicles, it should be good for 300K.
I'm still gonna beat him down on price though!!! '

Front bumper mounts are the same but last longer. Sounds like your car was looked after properly.
