Question No Brake Lights or reverse lights

Hi Everyone
I have just purchased a 1999 XJ8. I took it to my local auto electrician becuase I was getting the message 'Rear Bulb Fail' and 'Boot Open' on the dash. The brake (stop) lights and reverse lights were not working, although the High stop brake light is. He checked the fuses and the bulbs and then rang a 'Jag person' who told him it might be the SLM. He checked it and found that it had water damage. I must admit there was some water in the boot when I got it, and I got it out straight away, but didn't think there would be anything electrical in the boot!
Anyway, he took the SLM out. I have tried to find a replacement, but while I can find some of the same part number, when I talk about VCATS they don't really know what I am talking about.
I did finally speak to someone today who seemed to know more and knew about the VCATS numbers, but he seemed to think that the SLM did not control the bottom brake lights!
I am confused.....can someone please tell me what the SLM does actually control.
Also where are the fuses for the brake lights?
Cheers
Arthur

Have you got an owners handbook, it has the fuse locations. This document may help!

Thanks very much that is really useful and has answered my question. Following the diagrams it does indeed look like the SLM controls the brake and reverse lights. I really appreciate your help.

So I hate to resurrect an old thread, but in honor of Easter, here we go!

Long story short, similar issue in that my car shows boot open and no brake lights come on, including the third center brake light. Also, my keyless entry does not work, though the key operates the doors. Even the center console button that unlocks the doors does not unlock the doors, but I'm pretty sure it locks them.

What had happened? :-( I cracked a 5 gallon plastic jug full of water in my trunk on as I sped home and didn't notice until 6 hours later. Less than 2 gallons remained rear of the spare tire and no visible water or damage to the fuses, though some water got under the battery as the paint was damaged.

So does the SLM fix this issue? I checked all my fuses in the trunk and under the hood but didn't bother with the heel board fuses and didn't check any relays cause I don't know how and the fuses were all good. What's my best bet then? Does the Security Locking Module control the brakes? Where is it located?

Thank you so much!

Lightbulb Robert DIY

I found Robert's DYI video. It's a private video which you'll come across by looking at his video for the brake light problem.

Answered the majority of my questions.

Now it's time to get to work I suppose,...
