Unhappy No Heat & Boiling Over

Hi all. I'm new to the forum and need some help.

I have just purchased a 2000 XJ8. driving it home it had no heat from the heater and a very noisy heater fan. The temp climbed slowly and hovered just below half. Then it went to half and started to boil and chuck water out of the expansion tank.

I've fitted a new thermostat including metal housing and new water pump today but it is still doing the same.

Any ideas what to do next??????

Thanks.

Recheck the thermostat installation? Thermostat stuck closed? Reversed on installation?

How is the water pump? Impeller melted off? No coolant circulation?

Start digging.

+1 to Thermostat and/or Water Pump

My main concern would be keeping the engine cool and then worrying about heat in the passenger compartment.

You can do a lot of serious damage very quickly by overheating the V8 and the temperature gauge is useless.

Thanks for the comments. The pump, stat and housing are all brand new and installed correctly.
I noticed on photos of other engines that the 2 small hoses on top of the expansion tank were different to mine.
I've swapped them over and no more boiling over. Previous owner had the return feed to the rad discharging into the catch tank, therefore loosing all the fluid and steaming.

The heater is even working although not very hot and cools down when fan is turned up.

Any ideas on how to get the heater sorted?

Not the first time I have heard this story about those hoses being switched.

Bleed the system again and I'll bet you will get hot air. If not the next thing to check is the auxiliary water pump.

If they got the overflow tubes bass ackward, they may have the heater control valve hoses swapped too. There isa picture here somewhere . dsnyder is right after checking the hose routing, the next stop is the water pump. if its turning, then youshould try backflushing the heater core to see if it is plugged. If the wrong coolant is used, the matrix gets plugged. Ask me how I know that one!
