Removing the tail lights assembly, I banged the left one a bit too hard, and noticed the second filament of the brake/tail bulb had broken down. Dammit. So I went to buy a spare.

Mounted it : EVERY. THING. IS. WORKING. PROPERLY. Tail lights are back on, as well as the front side markers.

I don't understand. I'm guessing the original bulb was misbehaving even though both filaments looked fine, but I can't see how it would wreck such havoc. It's not like the tail lights and side markers are mounted in series? I think.

The battery, unfortunately, seems to be on its last legs... currently in charge, it didn't have enough power to start the engine.
Not to add insult to injury, especially since I'm the insulted one, but I strongly suspect that the battery was fine until I did a short circuit a couple days ago and put the car in lockdown/antitheft protection.

All this to say: sorry for having wasted your time with a nonexistent problem
Don't try to make sense of it, just roll with it! When you have a problem, the secret is to just stay with it and eventually you figure it out, or you stumble onto a fix. You didn't waste anyone's time. In fact, this thread may be very useful to someone else who has the same problem sometime.

Also, the battery seems to be holding up so far, I hope it stays that way!

Reddevil ,

The terms fog and running may be mixed up on the print , different English languishes

But yes on power at the red and blue which should be the center pins on the bulb sockets

There is a history of the socket ground path lacking which would allow enough current to pass and illuminate the bulb but not enough to not trigger the current sensor to give you the light inop indication

incorrect bulbs will do this

Using a test light, power on, I have power to green wire on left rear (US passenger) and power on red wire right rear (US driver). Nothing happens at the brake light bulb wire. It is orange on drivers side, and orange on passenger side.

Not quite sure of the wire colors you mentioned but we can go further

Do you have the 3rd brake lights or high mounted upper center lights during brake pedal depression

Fuse check

Relay swap

This is a pic for a fuel pump issue but your relays are in the pic

The 2 oranges are the fog lights or dim red lights not related to the brake pedal

3rd high mount brake light works. Replaced fuse already, no luck. Here is a pic of my fuse box. I swapped the stop light relay with one of the other ones, no luck.

Aint that a pisser! I didnt realize that was controlled by the other fog light switch! I feel stupid....nevermind then. Geez. Hkwever, the "check rear lights" stays on. I do have 2 bulbs out in the high center mount. Would that cause that display message?

Since you have the high center brake lights you proved you have a good brake pedal switch , fuse # 8 , ignition switch ground path , and stop lamp relay closing

Your physical rear light assembly is different then mine as I have the X300 earlier version

The current sensor is a clue and can be tricky to decipher the information it gives you

The outside of my tail light assembly looks the same but there was some changes in the bulb layout and wiring for the X308
