O2 sensor problem

My Jaguar XKR 2001 (45K miles) engine check light has come on. I reset the codes to make sure that there is a problem and sure enough after a few trips the light came back on. The engine check code is P1646 which is "Linear o2 sensor control chip (bank 1)".
P1646 identifies the upstream, before the catalytic converter, O2S, right side. You can test the heater element (RU/WG) with an ohm meter. The sensor (R/Y) puts out less than 1v with engine running.
Question is how do you take this sensor out as I can see it but cannot reach it from under the car. Do you need to remove the cat and exhaust ? Where do the wires go from the sensor i.e. where is the connecting plug e.t.c
Thanks
