Anyone know what would cause oil in the airbox?

usually it means you have bad blowby and its sucking it up through the vent tube and this also runs down into the airbox sorry man to be the bearer of bad news

When I got my car, it had spent much of its
life in greasy NY state, (rust, grime) and the
air filter had a bit of oily grime in there.

I replaced the filter, and never saw the
greasiness since.

It is most likely a clogged part load breather which is super easy fix. Excessive blowby due to Nikasil failure (assuming he has a '98-'00) XJ is extremely rare these days.
