PCL tyre pressure gauges + accuracy
PCL makes a pencil type tyre pressure gauge and
are headquartered in Sheffield.
Apparently Trading Standards regulates the accuracy
of tyre pressure gauges in the UK to some extent.
Luckily, as a Jaguar forum, there are plenty of UK
members here.
Any comments?
I had a 30+ year old stick type which was always
consistent. The accuracy was not important to me.
Only that a specific reading was repeatable.
However, the seal ring started falling out and my
"repair" with crazy glue resulted in difficult usage
since the pencil had to be held at just the right
angle to get a reading. Still as pretty as ever in
brass plate with velvet sleeve, but hard to use.
The hunt was on, and according to a RACQ study,
the PCL pencil type read within 0.2 psi of true beating
pricier digital and dial type contenders.
Then came the ebay search.
Amongst the new units available in the UK, I found
a pair of Land Rover branded PCL manufactured pencil
gauges still in the packaging and hit the buy it now
button.
They look a bit older and sturdier than the current PCL
offering. I'm hoping that this turns out to be true.
Sorry, I got hoggy and bought both remaining units.
Some post purchase reading says that they are hand
assembled and tested to a standard of +/- 1 psi.
alltiresupply.com in Houston sells them for $13.95
Of course, I saw this after commiting on the Land Rover
units.

If you want to switch to digital this one came up as the most accurate in Consumer Reports tests, $10, not bad:
New Accutire MS 4400B Digital Tire Pressure Gage Consumer Reports Top Pick | eBay
Supposed to be accurate to .5 PSI or so.

good digital gauge....and it so happens mine is attached
to a tyre inflater ;o))
I still have the pencil type in my original X308 tool kit
for show purposes.....about all they are useful for ;o))
Well, that's two for switching to digital.
While they have their attraction I suppose, they
require batteries and are lumpy in the door pocket.
Frozen batteries can be a problem for me.
But, what I was really after was experiences with the
repeatability and accuracy of the PCL pencil gauge
in particular.
Repeatability of readings is actually more important
than accuracy(within reason) because the particular
inflation requirement of a tire is all relative to experience
with the tire in a set of circumstances.
For some reason, I am cursed with acquiring vehicles that
have a pair of leaky tires. Comes with buying used I guess.
