HI,

2002 XJ8. The driver's seat reclines, but does not come back up. I tested the switch by using the one from my 2002 XJR (all the controls work on that car, and therefore switch), no difference. Still will recline but not come back.

I just bought a used motor which was supposedly tested and hooked it up to the connector and the same thing, motor runs to recline, but does not run to come back up??

Any ideas??

 

It's most likely a blown/burned up relay in the control module under the seat.

I had exactly the same problem on mine, only on the passenger seat. First diagnosis was a bad motor, as it did not turn to the other direction even if it was fed directly from a power supply. After replacing the motor, the bad relay on the control module was spotted. I think it's possible to fix the module if you can hold a soldering iron and manage to find the right relay for it. I took the faster, easier and more expensive way, and had the whole module replaced...
