Default Purpose Of Flap Covers Behind Radiator?

What is the Purpose Of The Two Flap Covers Behind The Radiator? See photo.
I am in Thailand where obviously its hot, considering removing the flaps to improve air flow.

They were fitted for a reason, they open at speed and block hot air back flow from engine bay when stopped.
If you have problems just wash the radiator and ac condenser at the front, make sure it doesn't obstruct the flow

If they are brittle, you can get some rubber from any business that installs in-ground pools, cut a piece to fit, then use a riveting device to fasten it in place of the old one. I did this with my old XJ40 years ago. Just find rubber the approximate thickness of what you want to replace as the stuff comes in various “sizes.”
