Default Quick Suspension Questions

I have a couple quick suspension questions that might not have such quick answers. The how-to write-ups on this site are great, I'm not asking for installation instructions per se, just some miscellaneous questions that are gnawing at the back of my mind.

First, front shocks -- if I get the Bilstein shocks (see eshocks.com: Shocks and Struts: XJ (X308 Chassis) ) do I get the ones for the standard suspension or the sport suspension? Or is it just a matter of taste?

Second, which bushings (front end only at this point) do you recommend that I replace while I've got the car jacked up and the front wheels off?

Thanks!

Mike

Mike,
For your car I would go with the shocks that are listed for the standard suspension. This should give you the ride you are accustomed to.
Under the car, I would wiggle the front wheels and check for any play in the suspension components. Look at the bushings and sway bar links for any looseness or tearing. If none is found, then I wouldn't replace anything else at this time.

The front shocks will have part numbers - replace like for like. No mismatching, i.e. comfort rear, sport front. Reason being the chassis/suspension setup is a whole, for example, anti rolebars are different diameters for comfy/sports and so are the bushes.

How far do you want to go? front subframe mounts to the rear and vee mounts, engine mounts, anti role bar etc etc.
How many miles on the car?

I have just under 69k miles on the car. I will do whatever I'm capable of doing -- small garage, no lift, lots of "guts!"

Will I be able to see the part numbers without removing the front shocks? If not, I'll have to take my chances - this is my only car right now.

Old Mike,

Yes, the part numbers are stamped lower end of shock tube, you will need to remove tire to see and may need a mirror if on back side. For what it's worth, Welsh had about the best deal on shocks $125 each if I remember correctly. Go ahead and replace the upper mount bushings, another $80, but well worth it. These have to be pressed out and in, but can be done with a 12mm bolt and a decent c-clamp (4" opening or larger). Just did mine last weekend. 1-800-875-5247 ask for Boon
