Default Rear right strange noise

Weird sound from right rear. It is like flapping sound, so for example some plastic cover is loose and wind moves it. Pam pam pam you can definetly hear it but it isnt metallic sound at all.

No sounds when driving over bumps etc..

it comes in pretty random in normal driving. This morning when i was rolling to red lights it came, and when i accelerated as light change didnt hear nothing.

rear right bearing is in need of replacement but that sound doesnt sound like bearing issue at all.

any ideas?

Check for irregularities or something stuck on your tire or perhaps loose lug nits.

Thank you for replying. Took the rear wheel of and everything seems to be ok, nothing is loose etc..

i mean that you would think that this sound would be permanent if indeed some critical issue.

Loose wheel arch liner? Rear bumper cover fully secured? Anything in the trunk maybe rolling around or not properly secured?

Went for a little drive and the sound was like somebody was in the trunk and knocking. Im pretty sure that nothing is moving in the trunk, because the sound usually comes when im just cruising straight.

Could it be something wrong in the rear, like drive shafts ot even the rear itself? Or cardan shaft. Really hope that is not the case.

So i put my iphone in trunk end went for a drive, audio attached. For some reason it sounds pretty silent but in reality its louder, i mean you can definetly hear it when driving. It lasted couple of seconds when driving straight maybe 60km/h

With my eyes closed I imagine something going round and round in your sound clip.

I once had a small pebble trapped between the brake disc and backing plate and it sounded as if the wheel was just about to fall off!

You'll need to remove the wheel, jack stand it, and chase between the disc/backing plate with a thin screwdriver and see if anything is rolling round up in there, a little stone can cause a heck of a noise in the right place.

Can you hear it from the outside while driving slowly? Is there too much play on that about to be broken wheel wearing ? It is not the first time when loose wheel bearing allows the brake disc/drum to tilt that much where handbrake shoes start to hit to the rust of the disc/drum making irregular sound.

There is minor play on bearing, that could be it. Have to check that one out. I mean that it so random, sometimes i can drive 40km distance and no sound then it appears for short time and then no sound at all.

it seems to be somewhere around 50-60km/h speed when it occurs. At least so that i can hear it when driving.

Does your power antenna work? There's a plastic belt inside there that runs the mast up and down. If the belt is slipping, it will make clicking sounds kinda like that. That doesn't explain why it's random, unless there's some reason why it's randomly trying to move the mast. That's probably not it, but it's what I thought of first when I heard the sound.

Just an FYI, there’s supposed to be a small amount of up and down wheel bearing play. There’s a thin spacer that goes in between the two bearings that comes in different thicknesses. We’ve had cars come in for a concern and found out that someone else was in there before me and left that spacer out. Compare both sides as far as play is concerned before you replace something you may not need.

As far as the noise is concerned, In your original post, you stated: “This morning when i was rolling to red lights it came, and when i accelerated as light change didnt hear nothing.” Can you tell me if your foot was off the gas and brake pedal when that noise occurs?

When you had the right rear wheel off yesterday, did you notice if the inside sidewall of the tire was contacting the wheel well? Is that rubber bump stop securely fastened to the fender well with those 4 Torx T40’s?

Also, are the wheels and tires factory wheels and the tires factory size? When you noticed this noise originally, had you done anything to the car just prior to the noise?

thank you for replying. I will check other side for comparison.

noise occurs when foot is on the gas pedal. Then when i stop and move again there is no sound.

didnt notice any contact on wheel and wheel well, but definetly going to check those one out.

do you have picture of that rubber bumb stop? i dont know what this is.

Another suggestion: when you get the sound while cruising, press lightly the brake pedal and listen to any change in the sound or whether it maybe momentarily stops.

There are zerk fittings on the output shafts from the dif: grease them.

Also, check the donut hanger for the exhaust in the right rear.

Took the car from winter storage and sound was getting worse. Bearings on left side drive shaft are broken so propably that is the reason. I have right side drive shaft already available, are these drive shafts same on both side, so can I use the right side shaft to replace left hand shaft?

I think you are referring to the Axle Half Shaft Rod, and yes they fit both sides.
