I noticed the other day that the rear tires on my 2000 xj8-l had the inner edge completely ate away and the steel belt was sticking out all over. I called a place about doing a four-wheel alignment and they said it would probably have to go to the dealer for that. Is that normal? I called the dealer and they want 150 and another 500 if they have to shim it. Is it normal to have to go to the dealer for a alignment?

I would try another alignment shop. A good shop should be able to do a 4 wheel alignment for a reasonable price.
