Smile X300 Rear shock mounts

Hello to one and all,

I am gathering parts for replacing my rear shocks and any other parts needed. I see at Rock auto that there is a coil spring insulator offered. I suppose this is needed with the new Bilstein shocks. Years ago I had this done and I remember that there was a rubber pad that went underneath the edge of the mounting cup that supported the top of the shocks up in the frame. Is this spring insulator that part?

Thanks guys.

Hi EZDriver,

Part 5 in the diagram below is the large foam rubber spring isolator or "donut," and it will not come with your Bilstein shocks so you'll definitely want to order a pair.

You may want to confirm that your new shocks will come with the lower bushings, Part 17. If not, you will want to order those also.

You will also need the smaller foam rubber isolator bushes, Parts 13 and 14, but it is likely that they will be included with your shocks - just confirm with the vendor.

You can look up part numbers at this link:

I have photos of the rear shock job on our '93 XJ40, which is very similar to the X300 with the exception of an additional rubber bushing at the top and a fixed lower shock bushing:

The Bilsteins come with everything assembled as the part #7 group.

When I replaced my shocks, I also replaced parts 4 and 5. 5 was an absolute requirement after almost 20 years, and 4 turned out to be fine. But I did it just in case I damaged the originals removing/installing the springs.

No problem, I obsessed over this too before replacing mine since I knew it was a PITAsteroid job

I didn't want to miss something and have to do it again.

.... so I try to help when others are trying to figure it all out prior too.

Recent feedback also seems to indicate the "A frame drop" method is easier...

Good luck!

OK Al. You got me now. What is the "A" drop method.

The A frame method is by far the best.
