Default remote programming

i have a 1999 XJR. I have the instructions on how to program it. I opened the drivers door, I opened the boot, I put the key in the ignition and turned it to position 2(accessories on, engine off)(dashboard message panel is flashing door open, boot open), I hit the Valet switch 5 times....nothing. No chirping, no flasjing lights, nada. The troubleshooting guide says to 'check' the valet switch. Well, it works fine to lock the boot and goes into Valet mode, so I am assuming the valet switch is working just fine since it is doing what it it supposed to. How in the heck do I get it passed this point and into the 'programming mode'? Will the dashboard message center state 'in programming mode'?

I even tried the instructions for XJR's with no Valet switch (the flashing of the lights 4 times, etc) Nada.

Any other suggestions would be welcome!!!!
