My 2000 308 VDP with 81000 miles just went into restricted performance and I drove it home about 5 miles taking it easy. I bought the car used it was a one owner car. I did read about the camshaft tensioners and I had that on the cards to be taken care of. The car did run ruff but no mechanical sounds or knocks on the way home and I have it booked to go in on Monday next week for a code scan etc. Should I be worried that the tensioners have failed or is it more likely to be a sensor, hoping that I did not damage the engine valve train etc
Will post follow up results but just need any help and positive thoughts.

Thanks Stuart
This is happening to me currently, in a couple days you will receive a check engine light, 98% positive its a misfire (bad sparkplugs or bad ignition coil) i bought plugs (OE Plugs) from Napa auto they were autolite plugs for 32$
Stuart,
If one of the exhaust cams skips a tooth the engine will run rough. It could trigger a CEL due to a misfire. If a tensioner has failed you might hear a rattle briefly on startup, and even one more startup could cause another skipped tooth resulting in valve damage.
If you feel lucky, keep driving, but I wouldn't take the chance and would remove the valve covers and check the upper tensioners before starting it again. Please understand that it is when you start the engine that a failing tensioner will allow the chain to skip a tooth. Once running there will probably be sufficient pressure in the tensioner.

Reason: sp
Check up completed scan gave out the following codes PO305 and PO355 which was #5 ignition coil and coil circuit now replaced with part # LNE 1510AB. i also elected at this time to check the tensioners both showed cracks, and are now replaced part # C2A 1511 and C2A 1512 Back on the road out the door $1177 US including tax parts about $565 for parts. Now for a set of tires. That's all for now folks.
80,000 miles the engine internals spotless you can see the cracks 80,000 miles
