Will the roof console of a 98-03 xj8 plug in to my 96 xj6 .Evidently my garage door opener wont program to rolling code. And hoping a newer one will.

 

I would try to get a used HomeLink unit from a newer car and fit it to your console. ebay is a good source.

 

Before you replace the console give Homelink a call. I had the same problem with mine and found out that the homelink works on certain freq and my gate remote was 433 mhz and therefore too high a freq. You can buy a receiver with a remote to piggyback onto your present garage door opener and then use your original jag homelink.
