Rpm problems 1998 xj8
First, thank you for spending some of your time today to help me on my problem. So I've just taking my car out of the mechanic for a new transmission, he said that the car was good now and nothing else is wrong with it yet I've noticed that my car's rpm still shoots up form either 1 to 2 rpm when im driving, mainly when ive come to a stop (light or stop sign) im not sure exactly what else to do.(also this is my first car hence why im dumbfounded on the issue) i would really appreciate the help or advice on what i should as soon as possible thank you.

Without any input from you, the engine rpm rises while driving and while at stop?
Any warnings displayed on the dash, amber/red lights on?
Do you have access or know anyone with a code scanner?

The rpm is either at 1 or 2 when driving usually when i come to a stop it sometimes struggles which im guessing why it goes up to 2 rpm, while for the most time it stays at 1 rpm or a little above it. As for the light only an orange light comes up but nothing else. ( no check engine, or anything else)
thank you,
Hmmm - so the Amber warning light comes on, any messages in the message center??
From your description, sounds like the idle is hunting when you come to a stop, try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes, reconnect and see what happens.

The Instrument pack has 13 warning lights and 5 of these are ORANGE.
You've said it's NOT the CHK Engine so must be Restricted Performance or Transmission in "limp home" or "hot mode". Both of these should be accompanied by a warning message displayed in the message centre.
It is very odd to see no codes. If you are seeing no messages and no codes then it could be an air leak on the inlet hose or first signs of a failing TPS (Throttle Position Sensor).
If this has only happened since the new transmission was fitted, I'd definitely be taking it back to the mechanic.
