Twenty years is a pretty long time for mufflers to remain without issues. The Bimmer muffler lasted 26 years.
I love the quiet of the Duchess as she navigates the highways. That smooth effortless glide with no road noise
is something that satisfies my expectations fully.

I love these cars. But I've only heard a few of these cars with a nice sounding exhaust. A lot of that has to do with not many people modding these cars, imo. Stock is way too quiet for me. Luckily I have S/C whine. That said, I'm thinking no kittens and x pipe with mufflers a tad louder than stock should sound nicely. @XJR-99 has the best sounding x308 xjr imo.

Spent a little time in the car today and the exhaust is growing on me a bit. Will still probably look for a spare exhaust system so I can add an x-pipe and keep my stock exhaust in case I want to go back. Is the XJR exhaust different from the XJ8? Wondering if I need to find an XJR specific stock system. I know the tips are different from the XJR/XJ8 just not sure about the rest of the system.

Not long ago I looked at a pair of XJ8 mufflers without the brushed tips on and discovered the pipe diameter was smaller than that of an XJR. I don’t have the exact number but I seem to this it was about 1/8” to a 1/4” difference. I’m talking about the pipe coming out of the muffler, I’m not sure about the inlet pipe diameter difference.

You get basically the same effect to test out by just removing the rear muffler sections and going for a drive around with the mid-muffler pipes dumping into the wheel wells, a tiny bit more grunt but a REALLY bad resonance at 2k rpm. Obviously don't do this for extended periods since it'll dump onto your tires and heat em up, also exhaust fumes probably aren't great for rubber longevity. I think I've heard elsewhere that X-pipe in the shared muffler, and possibly deleting the mid mufflers if you really want noise, but keeping the rear mufflers in place is a good move.

I've been considering trying out supersprint X-pipe 131012, I have a spare shared muffler section where the muffler is bad. It seems like you can just cut out the muffler and slip that X-pipe in place, but I haven't been able to get a clear answer from Supersprint on if it requires additional parts or mods, the X-pipe looks a bit shorter than the OEM muffler... That and there's other places I need to put money towards on the XJR, such as buying another set of tires which hopefully don't cause highway vibration, really hoping that it's just bum tires there and not something weird frame related.

Hello this is Roberto from SuperSprint Italy. I noticed your post. Many of our employees are currently on summer holiday retreat/vacation until August 22. Please reach out to our Jaguar specialist "Raffo" and he will gladly answer any and all questions you have about your car's exhaust system. Here's his direct email;r.bertani@supersprint.com

Thank you for considering SuperSprint exhaust system.
Respectfully,
Roberto

That makes sense since the tips are definitely different betweewn the two.

There is no right or wrong sound in my opinion. It is more a sweeten to taste situation.

Let me know how you get on. I'm putting the old exhaust back on today but will probably hold onto the SimplyPerformance pipes and watch what you and others do.

We love to have our cars "sound" like our cars. It's not unusual to try different things that personalize our ride.
I can tell you that the Jaguar engineers wrestled with the issue for a while before coming to agreement.

Will do. It's growing on me and I've been driving the car more, but still only occasionally. Should be able to get my new tires mounted next week and then I can put some serious mileage on her. That will be the real test. Still haven't had it out on the highway for an extended period with the new exhaust so we'll see.

I've been driving it every day and I don't know whether it's because I've been subconsciously driving around the boom but they are definitely growing on me too and the resonance feels less intrusive.

Indecisive? Me? Not sure whether I am or not but leaving them on for now.

Yea, same here Mark. Have put about 100 miles on the car (still no highway trips) and I'm definitely liking it more that I was initially. Definitely leaving them on for now, the car definitely has more presence now making a little bit of rumble. Funny that we're both slowly coming to the same conclusion.

Hi @87LC2 , how are you getting on without the mufflers?

I just had to put a new down pipe/cat on my car and decided to put the stock mufflers back on. The drone at 2K revs finally got to me. I love the burble but I want to get back to Jag serenity.

They definitely grew on me! I actually like them at this point. Hardly any drone and since I'm usually doing 80+ on the highway I'm out of the drone rpm range anyway. I think I definitely like them better than stock since you can actually hear the car now, but could definitely understand preferring the stock system as well.

On the other hand, I've since purchased a 2006 XJ8 for a daily driver and that car actually has great engine noise from the factory. Not much exhaust noise, but you can tell there's a V8 under the hood when accelerating. No way am I touching anything on that exhaust system, its perfect as-is. It's too bad the x308s didnt have just a bit more sound from the factory, if so I never would have touched it.

On the motorway/highway, it's fine but I seem to spend an awful lot of time in the 1,500 to 2,000 rpm range on the local roads where I do most of my driving. I'm pretty dissappointed to be losing the V8 burble but I spend more time in the car than listening it outside so I decided to be pragmatic

Now, what about an X-Pipe?

Absolutely get an X pipe in place of the large single front muffler and straight pipe the two center mufflers in front of the differential. Leave the factory rearmost mufflers alone. No drone, sounds great and not obnoxious.

I've heard the same, x-pipe in place of the front box is the way to go. I'll get around to it eventually but for now I'm OK with how the car sounds.
