Default Starter not engaging

My 2002 XJ8 Sport isn't in good health at present. Basically, on turning the key it sounds as if the starter is spinning but not engaging. On previous cars I've had I would simply tap the casing of the starter and hope that would encourage the solenoid to engage. Is this possible on my XJ8, I cant see the starter let alone tap it.
I've searched through previous threads and have seen a few other possible problems, loose connections, low voltage on batteries and even keys/remotes that need re-programming.
I've checked all connections under the bonnet and taken the battery out and re-charged fully.
I'll take it to a garage if I need to but I'm always afraid of getting over charged at specialists and of independants not having correct diagnostics or knowledge.
If I can access the starter without the need for a lift I'll be more than happy to tackle it myself. Also, no other faults are indicated on display.
Any advice would be very gratefully recieved.
Thanks

The starter n these cars is NOT particularly easy to change. Sitting thousands of miles away, it seems like ther eis a good chance it IS your starter itself.
