Steering Column Reach Motor

Hi
Does anyone have any experience of replacing (or even repairing) the reach motor on a 2001 (X308) XJ8? Mine started clicking, so the motor's still turning but obviously the gears are not engaging (and the steering wheel's stuck in the farthest away position).
I've lots of experience working on cars, but not done this before, so was wondering if its something I can do in an afternoon.
Also - does anyone know if the earlier models' reach motors fit the X308? The dealer wants £250 for one so it looks like I'll be searching the breakers yards.

Hi Mikey,

I took a look at my JTIS and the reach motor assembly appears to be on top of the column about where the tilt motor on the left side would be. I'm guessing you would have to tilt the steering column all the way down in order to reach it. It looks like that if you can get to it you should be able to replace it but looks tricky. I had the reach motor on my '96 XJ6 go south and I just adapted to it in the forward position. You can try imitating Stirling Moss.

I dont know if you have found the answer but ... i am looking for the repair as well i have found the part though... look at my thead. there is a picture that might help. how to repair Steering Column Reach Motor cable on an XJ8 1998
