I am using the one in the console, though I read of your discovery of the boot connection, and was going to get to it after establishing power.

I've managed to get the bluetooth working and connecting to my phone, however the Stereo still doesn't provide me with phone functions. I am unsure which is the connector in the boot, could you describe it to me or perhaps post a photo? Sorry to be a pain with this! Thanks, S.

 

sounds like you have made progress! the phone controls on the stereo and steering wheel wont control the bluetooth kit, all you can do is vary the volume of the phone call (just use the volume control when in a call).

If the kit is cutting in and muting the stereo (should be displaying 'phone' on the display) then you should be there - if not then you may need to look at the connector in the boot. The connector itself is in the rear fuse box enclosure and is sat in a piece of the moulding obviously meant for the factory phone ecu

 

What colour is it? I can see a yellow one in there but I'm unsure if that is the one which requires grounding. I have the original factory phone ECU, it is actually fixed to the lid of the fuse box in the boot not inside the fuse box. So far I have nothing on the display on the stereo.

If I can't get this bluetooth system to work properly, I'll just re install the factory option and live with it.

 

ah, i didnt realise you had the factory phone.. Do you have another connector in the centre console that is/was being used for the handset (square red/black connector)?

I would guess that the connector you need is the one going into the ECU in the boot. I would pull it and try grounding pin 4 to see if the stereo mutes - if it does then you are in business!

 

The connector into the factory phone ecu is a blue one bigger than the one in the console. Is this the one you mean? To ground pin 4 do I just stick some wire into it and ground it to the earth point in the boot?

sounds about right and yes, just bung a wire in and connect the other end to the conveniently located battery :-)

 

OK, I'll try that tommorrow when it is a bit lighter. So after I plug into pin 4, what should the stereo do? Obviously mute, but does it work the same as previous? By that I mean display "Phone" breifly before going blank again.

I'll see if I can actually separate thw wire from the rest of the loom to allow a more secure grounding of the pin 4 wire too if I can.

yes you are :-)

at this point we are only grounding pin4 to prove we have the right connector. Assuming that we have, you will then need to connect pin4 (and the other two pins for audio) back to the bluetooth kit..

 

Sorry to be so Thick with this (You wouldn't think I re wired an entire Triumph Herald would you) but which other two pins?

Actually I may just bury the Jag in the Garden and use the Herald everyday! Back in 1971 Bluetooth didn't exsist, so can't cabbage my head! :P

you may be on to something there :-)

Your bluetooth kit should have mute, audio - and audio + connections. These need to be connected to the stereo in order that it mutes and sends the sounds from the phone through to the speakers.

On my 2002 XJ8 all three of these wires were in the connector in the boot (not in the centre console as all the previous posts had stated). If when you ground pin4 the stereo does mute then it stands to reason that the audio connections must also be there (I can't remember which pins they are but I will look it up for you if pin4 works). You then need to connect the three pins to the three wires on your bluetooth kit and roberts your mothers brother!

I hope this makes some kind of sense! if I am teaching you to suck eggs then let me know :-)

Ok Pal, I'll let you know the results. Luckily I have an early finish from work tommorrow so shall dash home and see what happens. I'll be able to take advantage of the daylight, and see what happens. If I'm still stuck, I'll post some pictures of what situation I have.

God! Why couldn't Jaguar have employed Mystic Meg back in the day to forsee the invention of Bluetooth!? Oh well, it's a challenge!

Hi Icarus, I tried grounding pin 4, but the stereo displayed phone constantly, even when the engine was off and car locked up. I'm gonna check all my wiring again this weekend. I'll let you know what turns up. Stu.

That is great news - it means you have found the correct connection. you now need to connect pin4 to the mute connection on your bluetooth kit. You will also need to connect the two audio inputs I mentioned, you should find these on pins 31 and 32 (31 is audio postive 32 is audio negative). Once you have made these three connections you should be away!

Hi Matt, sorry I've not replied for a little while but I've been busy with work. I've managed to connect the kit and it is now working fully, I have connected to the pins you advised and it is working great. However my attempt to retain the factory mic seems to have failed as my fellow tester tells me that they can only hear me very quietly so I will have to see if I can get the kit's mic wired back up and in. Thanks for your help it was very very VERY useful to me.

Does anybody know which wire on the head unit can act as a remote wire to turn on an amp. I have a xj8 99, stock head unit using a line out converter... no built in amp. Standard system. Help please. Just really looking for the color of the wire so i can tap into it.
