I bought a 1998 XJ8 last November (I love it). However, I must have pushed the "valet mode" switch, & now I cannot open the trunk with the center button as I used to be able to. I can only use the black key (the only key I have). If I open the trunk before unlocking the door, the alarm beeps at me, & then in a short while, goes off (unless I quickly unlock the door).

Any suggestions as to how to get out of "valet mode?" Thanks...Bob

 

I had this happen to me when was purchasing car. 1998 XJ8. there was only one black key and no remote. Looking at the drivers manual it appears that you have to use the black key in the trunk to clear the Valet mode.
I know we did something with the key to clear it at the car lot. Also maybe lock and unlock with black key in the door. Give it a try. hope this will clear the valet mode.
Until you do it is always reminding you its in Valet mode.

Valet mode is cleared by opening the trunk and the trunk lights coming on. That's the signal you have access the car with something more than a valet key. Those lights can't come on unless you have a master key or a remote, both of which you don't leave with a valet.

I had a broken wire in the right boot hinge and my car would not come out of valet mode. It had been repaired before (wire crimps) but broke again. It was the boot (trunk) lights that did not come on.
