Default Sunroof Issues

My 01 VDP evidently has some sunroof issues, so I am seeking opinions and advice.

After I bought the car last fall, I operated the sunroof mechanism ONCE. I only let it get partway back when I saw that there was a black cable stretching from the front center by the controls, diagonally across the opening towards the passenger side of the panel. Clearly not the way it was supposed to be. So I presume the drive cables or at least one of them are mis-routed. I was able to get the unit to cycle back to the closed position successfully, and I left it alone over the winter. But now that things are warming up, I need to add this to my list of things to understand and fix.

Can the drive cables get dislodged and still let the unit operate?

Secondly, the inner trim panel is bunched and wrinkled, especially on the driver's side, where the panel sits on the opening trim strip. Is the trim strip supposed to sit hard down on the trim strip and get dragged back and forth, or is it supposed to float up a bit?

Suggestions on how to proceed?

There are no cables in the mechanism. Maybe you are seeing the spring clips that slide the back piece of the inner panel?
