Default transmission bangs into gear

I have a 1997 xj8 with 70000 miles on it. The transmission was replaced 2000 miles ago. Since then when i accelerate on occasion it "bangs" into gear. Most of the time its smooth going through the gears but every now and then there is a hard bang into the next gear. I bought is after the transmission was replaced from a mechanic friend. and he was willing to bring it to where he had the transmission replaced. He brought it to the transmission guy but he could not get the transmission to bang.into gear. I still have this problem. i really don't want this to go on much longer.
Any suggestions?

Have the shop check the fluid level.

Yes the engine must be running, and the transmission fluid must be between 30-50 deg C. The car should be level, so having it on a lift is the simplest way. But I know most of you don't have a lift, so four jackstands is the next best choice.
