Default Transmission removal issues

Hi all,

I have what I hope is a quick question. I'm taking out my trans to do a rebuild and it won't separate from the engine block.i've removed all bell housing to block bols, checked it three times but will check again. My question is simply, does the starter have to be removed as well? the lower starter bolt does not reach the bell housing but I can't tell about the top one...

I don't want to pry on things but might have to. Any recommendations on where to aply the force?

Thanks very much...

I had this happen. It's stuck on the dowels.
Before you pry, put a couple bolts back in loose.
When I pried mine, one side came loose only, and snapped off the casing where the stuck dowel was.
Having bolts there to control the removal motion would have saved it.
Good luck,
Rob

Thanks for that info. I'll spray some penetrating oil in the dowel holes as well.

Any particular place I should pry?

Thanks again!

If I remember correctly, there's an ear on the passenger side either very close to the starter or just below it that you can pry on first. Then once it's free on that side, put a small pry bar as close to the dowel as you can on the other side and apply a small amount of force to it and it should come free. Oh, and in total there are 16 bell housing bolts so count first then pry away.

16 bolts...a good double check, thanks.

It fought for a little while but popped off in the end. I was glad to have two bolts in as a safety.

So, it's out and on my little wheeled cart, ready for the next adventure!

Thanks for the help!
