Weird steering wheel wobble
Hi there!
I have a weird wobble in my steering after using my brakes a little longer...
The discs aren't warped before someone suggests that.
When I drive on a cold car, everything works as nornal. I press the brake, no wobble in my steering. If I don't use my brakes hard or over a long time, all is fine.
After then driving and braking (let's say pulling up to/approaching some red lights in the distance) the steering will wobble under braking and have a slight imbalance when driving again for a litthe while. After that every braking gets worse and worse but doesn't exceed the worst of it being a felt judder in decelleration.
If I park up and leave it for a day, the whole car is back to normal again.
As said, the brake discs are as flat as a pancake...
Ideas?
Cheers
Damien

I got something similar weeks ago turned out I had a air bubble/lock in my power steering from cutting the wheel all the way to the right while the car was off/not cranked. I cycled the wheel a few times in both directions w/ the car running & it was cleared.
It's not that. I've had this at least 2 years now and as I am in the processing of sorting everything out I want it gone...

Oh I figured it was a new issue.
Something binding like a piston in a brake caliper, strip and add copperslip, backing/chatter plates to the pads and maybe rebuild calipers with new seals/pistons? You may require new caliper(s), if the piston walls are damaged.
Hey Sean,
Thanks for your thoughts. Calipers were overhauled in 2015. New seals, pistons etc. NO damage to the bore... The guides of the pads are clean and the back already have a thin, very thin coating of cooper ease...

So you've had the problem since they were overhauled? New calipers then, as it's obviously a brake issue and your discs are apparently perfect this leaves the calipers as the culprit.
I actually had it before that too. Basically since day one... Which would be the 25th of Feb 2015
I replaced the calipers around June of that year, as the front right one was seized. Brake discs and pads were fitted last July...
Wheel bearings were replaced as well in 2016 (March, both sides at the front).
As said, when I slow down normally, there is no pull to the left or right (on a flat road). It just seems to get worse and worse the more I use the brakes. Leave it to stand for 8h or even 4h and all is perfect again. The hubs don't get hot, which would be a sign of some bad calipers (sticking) etc.
I'm lost with this...

I had a small vibration that showed up during harsh or high speed braking. All new Brembo rotors and Akebono pads so I didn't suspect them. It wasn't bad, but it was there.
After I had my control arm bushings and ball joints replaced its complety gone. No matter how aggressively I brake its smooth and steady.

Jeff,
I have acquired a 08 XJ with 86K miles with good service history. The brakes had a slight shimmy when braking so I Changed to Brembo Rotors and Akebono pads,Even though according to the mechanic the Rotors and pads were new on the car. The shimmy has not gone away,Even changed the rotors again as it may have been defective and the shiimmy is still there, When I Did this on 98 XJ8l it worked like a charm and there is no shimmy and fantastic braking power at high speeds.
Read on the forum about the Calipers being bad , how can I tell if that"s the cause. Or you have any ideas.
Thank you

I had big vibrations while braking a few years ago. Replaced the front rotors; no change. Thought that it was probably the ABS system since I had the ABS and trac control light going on and off at random. Replaced the ABS module which fixed its problem, but no change on the vibration. Then, this winter while replacing the motor mounts, the whole left front suspension was moving up and down while I was jacking the engine to get to the mount. What was happening was the weight coming off the subframe allowed the broken v-mount to be exposed. Replaced both v-mounts and the vibration issue was resolved. There are threads here that discuss the v-mount R&R; it's a GIANT PITA, but well worth the effort.
