1989 Antenna Stuck in off Position

Sounds like you'll need to recondition your power antenna. You can get the mast and gear kits on ebay quite reasonably priced. First obtain the mast and gear kit. Then remove the old mast - undo the nut at the top of the mast, then turn your key on and then the radio and pull the mast out as the motor is trying to lift the mast (should come out fairly easily) - note which side the teeth are on as you will need to feed it back in the same way later. Then remove the whole power antenna assembly, from memory you undo the power plug, undo the earth strap and two screws/bolts at the bottom and it should slip out. You will need to prize the cover off the antenna assembly, use several flat screwdrivers and work your way round the cover. Once open get your gear kit and work out where the parts go, then remove the old parts, clean all the gunk out of the case. Reassemble in the reverse order of dismantling. Replace the cover. Reinstall the antenna assembly again in reverse order of removing. Now is the time to reinstall the mast. Turn the ignition key on, then the radio, wait until the motor stops whiring place the plastic teeth facing the same was as they came out down the hole (until you get to the bottom), now turn the key off and the mast should feed in with help (just making sure it feeds nicely). It should go all the way to the off position at which point you tighten the nut and the job should be done.

There is a little black belt in that motor that has probably broken.
You need to remove the rubber seal boot to get the antenna out. You can pull up on the antenna with some pliers, you only need an inch. Back the nut off as far as you can, pull up the antenna a bit, remove the rubber boot.

Yes it could be the little black belt but that is included in the gear kit anyway. After 23 years there is going to wear to all the moving parts, so replacing the gears will be good for the long term.
You don't need to remove the rubber boot just push down on the antenna assembly and it should come straight out. Remember the rubber boot is 23 years old too and may not survive removal.
No the nut doesn't come all the way off - the mast will remain above it.

Ok now it is stuck in the up position which is fine (worry about it later in winter) But another problem I have is I have the original stereo and the cassette player dosent work. I put the tape in and the radio shuts off but the cassette does not turn on and I have to push it out. Any ideas whats wrong?
