1993 XJ6 will not start after battery went dead!!! Please help
I have a 1993 Jaguar XJ6 that has gave me no problems. I left the lights on last night and car will not start. I have put a brand new battery and engine doesn't even try to turn over. THe lights will come on but when you turn the car to start it nothing happens. I have no idea what to do.
The shifter is in Park. You cant move it either. Car worked perfect until I left lights on and drained battery. Is there a security feature that I need to override somehow? I don't have keyless entry just two keys.
Oh crap, I forgot about that magic but I never really understood it. I think it's possible for the security system to disable you if its' backup battery was dead.
Try key on, toggle the alarm switch in the center console back and forth a bunch of times. If you hear the security system make a tone, try to crank it again. If that doesn't work, try turning the alarm off and turning the ignition on and off repeatedly to see if you can get the tones. I don't remeber the programming sequence, I'll have to dig for it. This happened to me once in a '93 I once owned, and was able to wake it up just by switching the ign, on and off repeatedly.

The specific sequence to enable security system programming for 1993 and 1994 XJ6 is:
Ignitition key off
Security switch )in center console) on
Ignition on, position 1
Security switch off
Ignition off
Toggle security switch 5 times.
At this point, you should hear a tone which notifies you that the system is in programing mode and you could program a remote, if you had one. My guess is that you would be able to start the car at this point.

Tried this and no luck. Didn't hear any tone. I had the ignition off with security to on.
turned the ignition to position 1
then security switch to off
turned ignition off
toggled switch 5 times
This is correct right? I know it has to have something to do with the security because everything was working and has worked fine until the battery died.

What you got is all I got to give. If you have a good battery and good connections, I don't know what else to tell you. That's the factory procedure for programming.
I suppose if the car was on a tow truck, it could have been dropped and tripped the inertia switch. Look down all the way in the driver's footwell, on the left: there is a little black box with a pushbutton in the top. Pull the button up, and push it down. That will reset it if the car got bumped. Not likely, but the inertia switch will also disable cranking if tripped.
I got nuthin' else. Maybe someone else can jump in.

After you try the inertia switch, if you still have no joy, get a testlight and check all of the fuses in the driver's side fuseox indise the car. There is a fuse that feeds the center fuesbox, if this one is bad it will give you the same symptoms.
Check all fuses. I am not sure what the inertia switch is or where it is located. It like the engine is immobilzed. There is not a jaguar dealer no where near where I live. I also don't have keyless entry. When car was purchased I all got was 2 keys.
Ok, let's back up for a minute. You said you have lights coming on, are you seeing all of the instrument panel warning lights come on when you turn the ignition key to position II?
Open the center console, take off the fusebox cover in there, and check all the fuses for power. Go or no go?
IF THERE IS AN AFTERMARKET alarm system, or remote car engine starter, or any other buttons or switches added to the car, I may not be able to help you.

I am getting interior lights, truck lights. No instrument panel lights when I turn key to position II.
I think there is an aftermarket alarm system. I looked up some interior photos and I do an extra piece above the radio. Didn't realize this was aftermarket.

Thank you for all your help tonight. I am fixing to leave for work and will have to pick this up tomorrow. If you have any more ideas please post and I defintely try them. I will be sure to update this thread tomorrow also. Again thanks for your help. I am also going to have to get a testlight tonight also.
It will be impossible to trace the problem if an aftermarket alarm or remote starter system has been installed, unless here are obvious ways to bypass this equipment.
Once you get your testlight, check every fuse in all three fuseboxes. I know you said you checked the left side, but you didn't do it with a testlight you don't have.
