89 XJ6 Stalls at speed

Hi, new to Forum, We have a 89 XJ6 with 43k miles. Car has been running great since we bought it 5 months ago. This weekend we took it for a 70 mile drive and basically parked it for the day while at our destination. The temp during the day was close to 100 degrees. WHen we left to go home I got about 10 mIles and the car started surging and then basically quit on the highway. I waited about 10 minutes trying to figure out what happened and it started up and ran fine. We stopped for dinner for about an hour, and then left. About 40 miles later it did the same darn thing, start surging and then die. This happened 3 times before we made it home. Even once when the outside air temp was down to 86 degrees. My first suspicion was fuel pump, but now I am not to sure after looking at all the engine management components in my owners manual. Anyone out there experience this issue and know what it was to fix?
Thanks LArry

make sure that your fuel pump relay is not blue in colour(made by hella)
these relays build up a film inside of them because they are not sealed (causing intermittant no starts engine die outs etc)
if they are blue replace them with a sealed relay
