Question 94 XJ40 VDP Tires

Hi - the ol Jag has Pirelli P6000 225/60r16's all round, but rears are on their last legs. I'm thinking of putting a pair of Michelin 225/60r16 Pilot Sports on the rear - anyone running these? I'm running the Pirelli's at 28 psi - IF the michelins are ok to mount, what pressure do you think would be best?

ps I like quiet!!

Default Tire Pressure

My 94 XJ owner manual says 33psi front and 36psi rear. I typically go 32psi all the way around. Seems like it handles better at that pressure. Just be careful mixing tire brands cause even with the same size/dimensions they may not ride or handle exactly the same.

Thanks for the question/topic ... How would you rate your experience with the Pirelli P6000? Do you drive the car year 'round in BC, and how did they handle snow/ice? ... summer driving? I'm a '93 XJ40(XJ6) same size tires. Like you, I'm especially interested in QUIET.

Hi - I like the pirellis alot, were great this summer and so far pretty nice in the rain too, but last week spun out a bit on a leaf covered side street so not looking forward to the snow and ice with them.
They are a summer tire after all ..Still haven't decided what (if anything) to get this winter - most winters are pretty mild out here with maybe a week or so with snow every couple of years BUT some winters we get 4 feet of the stuff so if that happens I'll have to go with Red Green's fencepost halftracks or park the old girl. [obscure reference to possum lodge]

all the best and let me know what you end up with, ok?

Hey Mike, not sure but I don't think the P6000's are still in production (but don't quote me on that!)

Neither is currently listed on the Pirelli.com web site. I think the P4000/P4000E went out of production 2-3 years ago. Not sure about the P6000.

Might be loads of unsold inventory out there, though.

Cheers

The P4000 is a "Touring" tire. I think the P6000 is more of a "high performance" tire.

Smile Bit the Bullet

Update - I've been looking at a set of new shoes for the old jag for quite a while now and after much hummin' and harrin' and reading many reviews/opinions, plonked down the cash for 5 new Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum 225/60 R16 98W's. Not mounted yet, just ordered them today..gonna look great with those Aero wheels!

Now the 94 MY handbook tells me I've got to add more pressure if I run anything but the Pirelli apparently because the P6000 has a unique sidewall that allows for running at the "comfort setting" of 28 psi.

I've had her old P6000's at 28 psi the whole time I've owned the car, so I'm expecting a bit more of a bumpy ride at around 34 when I get the Kumho's mounted.

What do you guys think about filling these up with nitrogen?

Anyone running nitrogen filled tires on their XJ40's? Good idea?

I'll be getting them mounted in Seattle - any installer recommends from personal experience?

Thanks for any tips on tire care / maintenance - hard to believe, but in all my driving years, this is the first time I've ever bought 5 new tires - so tirewise, I'm a total newbie!

"What do you guys think about filling these up with nitrogen? "

My opinion only - It is 100% wasted money - just another silly way to get your money..

^+1

When you check your pressures on a Sunday morning, do you have the facility to top up with N or do you opt for a tow truck on Monday to take your car to an inappropriate tyre garage?

Save your money.

Air, has been generally proven to be good for most of us mortals, even though quite a few of us could be classed as Inert.

Default Ok, they're on and I love 'em

Just drove back from Seattle to Vancouver Island with the new Kumho Ecsta LX platinum 225/60R16 98w's. Super quiet, way quieter than the old Pirelli P6000's and much better ride quality too. Poured rain all the way and didn't get any aquaplaning and car handled better too.

Total cost for 5 tires: $573 mounted and balanced, - pretty hard deal to beat!
