Default AC compressor makes horrible sound

The AC compressor on my car has been working on and off for a while, have been planing to get the gas checked and filled as I've thought it beeing the gas just to low so it starts and stops because of that, but now I've been starting to hear a horrible sound from the AC compressor, it's stops when I turn the fan inside the car off, but as fast as I start the fan and as the clutch hits it starts and it doesn't sound good and it get louder when revving.

What's your ideas about this, is the pump done for it? Is it repairable, or could it just be the clutch? Anyone heard anything like this?

If I need to get it replaced how do I find a replacement, can't seem to find a good replacement anywhere, which ones fit my 1989 AJ6 with big round connector? Does the newer pumped from 1990 and forward for just except the contact? What's my options..?

Many thanks in advance from a frustrated Swede

Wow. I agree, that is a horrible sound. It almost seems like the clutch magnet may have a loose connection so that it is vibrating on and off. Possibly the clutch plate is bent? I'm not sure how that would happen though. I would definitely not leave the system on until you get it figured out.

Just out of the sound I'm guessing it's done, but what are my alternatives now, how do I find a good replacement, does the ones for the newer models fit or what do I do? Summertime is here and my jag is in the garage, that kind of sucks

New compressors are not hard to find. Rock Auto has Probably the best prices, and they had both versions when I got mine earlier this year. If your car has not been converted to 134 yet you might consider that can of worms too (sorry). You should check If it's just the magnet or the electric connections first though.

Some good videos on youtube on fixing compressors if you feel like taking it on.
