alternator question
A friend has an 87 jag. it ran fine when She parked it 6 months ago. She recently tried to start it. It runs fine as long as the jumper cables are hooked up to another vehicle. when they unhook the jumper cables the jag dies. Im thinking that if the battery in the jag is extremely dead, its pulling the voltage down so much that it will not work. she thinks its the alternator. I think she just needs a new battery. any input is appreciated, tia

RE: alternator question
Once started, if the alternator is working properly, the car should run without a battery attached.
Start the car while jumped, remove the cables and the old battery connection - removing the positive terminal is enough. The car should run. If the car does not run, the alternator is not producing any current - Alternator is bad.
If car continues to run, alternator is producing enough current for car to run. At that point I would drive it to an auto parts shop that load tests the alternator and check it that way. At this point you know you do need a new battery.
