Rear end broke on drive home, how hard to replace?
I bought a '94 XJ6 at an auction a few months ago and today I went to pick it up. It has 180,000 miles but the body is very nice and I got it cheap. The rear end was noisyon the ride homeand I got about 20 miles out when all of a sudden at 60 mph I hear what sounded like a muffler had fallen out and was dragging on the pavement, only much louder. I pulled over onto the shoulder and saw oil on the ground under the rear so I know it needs a rear end center section. Local pick and pull junk yards sell them for $65 so that is the best way to go. How hard is it to remove and replace and how can I tell if the junkyard part is any good? Also, what other years or models will work?
I did the same job on a late model Mercedes S-class and that was rather easy. I ordered a CD repair manual to guide me through it. Am I correct from your website that all 1988-97 XJ cars would fit?
All will interchange. The big difference is the power-lock or non power lock question. Which comes down to does it have posi-traction? Most XJ drivers don't even know it's there if they do, and even those units interchange!
