Default XJ 40 Value

A friend of mine has a 1994 xj6 VP that he has had since
2001. It has 98K miles and is in very nice shape. He has
always garaged it and never driven it in the rain. He also
has won either 1st or 2nd place in Drivers Class in regional
concours. He last showed the car in 2007. Trying to figure
out a fair price/value for the car. We have looked at
several value guides as well as high bids on Ebay and local
asking prices. Most guides show the car as $2400-$3000.
High bids seem to range from $ 900- $ 2200. Local ads show
$1000-$3300. The closest ad I found is $3300 (including an
immediate discount of $200)from a nearby independent dealer
for same yr and model with 88K miles and a 60 or 90 day
warranty. I am thinking $2500-$2800 for this car as it will
need some detailing and refurbishing (wheels) to bring it up
to former glory...It is a very nice car the way it is.
Any thoughts???

Josh

I'd say your in the right range if the car runs well and has no serious issues needing immediate attention. If the seller is hard up you can probably get it for even less.

When you get down to this price range....which is just a notch above "beater/transportation car" range in my opinion....it's more of a "what else can I buy for the same money?" type of thing, I think.

Sounds just right to me. I paid just about the same a couple of years ago for a beautiful car that needed just a bit of fiddling. The scandal is, these cars are worth much more as reliable and solid drivers (provided they have been well kept) than they are the luxury bits of British craftsmanship they are. That's why, I think, you will occasionally see the 7 or 8 or even 9K price tag on one of these 40's from time to time. Romantic thinking...
Cheers, Scott
