Default 1987 XJ6 Series III No Forward Drive on D shift

Hello good bosses here,
happy new year to everyone.

I am back again with a trouble for help.
My series 3 had a drained transmission oil so I did refilled yesterday and afterwards the car could only move perfectly on reverse and little or no effort to move when gear is shift to drive (D).

What's might be the possible problem and what do I need to do please.

Thanks

Mike.

Assuming the trnasmission was working OK before you drained the fluid.....

How much fluid did you refill with?

Was the old fluid very dirty?

Did you also change the filter? If so, is the new one properly installed?

Cheers

Doug, the trans was moving and shifting OK, is one of the cars i imported from US and not on road yet since sump was leaking so i called Jaguar mechanic in yesterday since i didn't want to find extra problems on the transmission for myself. The sump bolts were loosed, he tightened and filled up the fluid but didn't drained the leftover fluid. Afterwards the car moved forward about a distance of 10ft and refused to moved forward unless reverse.

fluid is at the maxi level on the dip stick.

We didn't change the transmission filter

I suggest a pure coincidence with the bolt tighten and the top off.

Linkage would be my guess. The cable cna fail while the shift lever might be in the D position, te lever at the box may not!

Teh housing on the cable can part and come adrift.

good luck

happened to me. lucky. inmy drve replaced cable. all was well

Have you bled the air? From the manual:

With footbrake and handbrake firmly applied, run engine for several minutes passing selector through the complete range to ensure transmission is primed.

Put transmission selector in P and switch off engine

Wipe dipstick with a clean cloth and dip immediately.

If necessary, top up with the recommended fluid and repeat steps above. DO NOT OVERFILL

With the engine running, select each of the gears in turn. Move the selector from P to R to N to D to 2 to 1, pausing a few seconds in each gear position. Then back to P then repeat.

Also, an automatic should be checked with the fluid up to temperature and with the engine running. It can often take 20km of driving to get the transmission fluid up to temperature. If the transmission is cold, fill to the min level and as it heats up it will probably go to the maximum level.

To add to the above, when running through the gears, keep your foot on the brake, move the selector from P to R. You should feel the gear engage and the revs to drop slightly. Wait a few seconds, move to N, etc.

Andy, I have done this over and over but nothing seem to be changed.
