Thought I had all the front end problems repaired in my '71 S1, but found
wear on the front stub axles. It shows up on the bottom only and you can see the
wear in the photos...LF was worse on my car.

 

This stub axle wear on the underside is very common. A lot of people have adjusted, (and ruined), the bearings due to not realising this kind of wear exists. I once replaced both sides on an XJ6 Series 3 I had. It was fairly straight forward once I had the stubaxle carriers removed. Undo the big nut at the back, (loosen off before taking the stubaxle carriers off), then apply a "talking hammer" to the stub axle with the carrier held up on two substantial blocks of wood, then insert new stub axles and put nuts back on and bolt up. Full torque can be applied when they're back on the suspension.

 

I have actually removed the entire front cross member and completely disassembled all the components from the front suspension. Everything was closely inspected and I saw no evidence of problems with the stub axles. Luckily I have a Brit race car fabricator looking over my shoulder on this project and he is pretty thorough. Thanks for the "heads-up".

 

tacamo- What are you going to do with the triple Weber setup on that XK engine? If you want to sell the manifold/ carbs/ linkage, let me know.

 

Sable- the intake setup on my XK engine used 48mm DCOEs and in all honesty was not really a streetable arrangement in an XJ with the BW auto trans. It really needs an engine with considerable head and exhaust work plus a manual transmission. My engine lost compression on one jug and my plans were to tear the engine down, rebuild it for high performance use and sell it an a complete assembly to someone like a vintage racer. Looks nice but in all honesty it is way over carburetted for a stock street engine.
