Default 86 XJ6 dash removal

I just received a factory wood trim kit for my 86 XJ6 vdp and would like to make preparations to install it. I believe I need to remove the dash in order to complete a proper installation.
Can anyone tell me the procedure for removing the dash? What other parts should I consider replacing or maintaining while the dash is out?

Also, the wood on the shifter panel is totally shot. That was not included in the kit. Anyone know where I can get a replacement, or get mine refurbished?

Best regards!

It's been a few years but this will cover the high points.

-remove under-dash panels and loosen steering column nuts. No need to remove them. You just want the column to drop 1/2" or so. Remove glove box door and glove box liner

-remove upper pad by removing screws under the lip. The pad then just lifts away. Be mindful of the temp sensor tube just above the glove box door

-remove plastic end caps at the ends of the dash

-remove center a/c duct. It just pulls out.

-remove map light. It just pushes upward and dangles.

-remove srcrews holding dash in place. As I recall there are a couple at each end and several along the top

-tilt dash back a bit and disconnect the two instrument harness connectors. You can leave the gauges in place.

-disconnect air outlets at end of dash

-at this point I think the dash can be lifted away. Be careful...check for anything I may have forgotten. Go slow. Keep track of everything. It's a several hour job.

Reassembly tip: when attaching the metal backing to the new dash make sure to fit and adjust glovebox door at the same time. Actually, it's more like adjusting the *dashboard* to fit properly around the glove box door. When the clearance/fit around the glove box is good tighten down the umpteen tiny screws that hold the metal backing to the wood.

Cheers

Doug, I'm really grateful for all your assistance. You have been so helpful.
From what I've heard, the dash can be a bear. So I want to go into this Dash renovation armed with a some upfront knowledge. I don't think I would want to take this on just following my nose. I appreciate the instructions and tips!

Best regards!

I was fortunate enough to find some dead xj6s at my local junk yards and practiced on those cars before doing my own. Its like paying $2 bucks for a cadaver....
