Default Buying advice SIII XJ12 or Double six

Hi all,

I am thinking to buying RHD classic Series 3 Jaguar XJ12 / Daimler Double six from UK following year.

is there any link like buyers guide or what I should check in order to buy real XJ12 / Double six.

i- what to expect to pay for a vehicle which will not need complete restoration / overhaul etc.

ii- what are the trim levels ? which trim level has all the options like a/c, abs, sunroof, electric & heated seats, Lsd diff ?

iii- what are the common faults ?.

In 1994 Jaguar XJ12 Sovereign HE would be my first car which I saw with my father and paid small deposit to the importer but when importer tried to pay custom tax, local registration etc. Vehicle captured by the customs office because it was stolen from UK.

now 26 years later I think that my youth dream can be real and own same vehicle as classic.

anyway I hope I can find one without rust, original condition within a reasonable price range becuase I should pay for transfer (UK to North Cyprus) then pay Custom tax + registration fee.

thanx in advance and have nice day

Cypriot

All V12 Series IIIs had limited slip. All had A/C. None had heated seats. Only a small handful of late V12 cars (1991-92) had ABS. I suspect all had a sunroof but I can't be 100% sure on that.

Neglect.

Rust.

In one of the sticky threads at the top of this section there is a buyers guide that might help. Check for a similar guide in the XJS section as well. I mention the XJS guide because it may have more V12-specific information

A Series III V12 is a wonderful car but, unless you seek out (and pay for!) an enthusiast-owned, ultra-premium example, be prepared to spend some time and money making it right.

Cheers

Thanx for prompt reply Dough,

I owned classic cars before and repaired / overhauled 2 of them.

First one Mk2 facelift Ford Granada 2.8 Ghia. It was my fathers car which bought in 1986 from its first owner who bring it from UK in 1986. Repaired / overhauled it in 1996 and after in 2006.

Second one Fiat 131 Racing Walter Rohrl Edition ( badged Mirafilori sport) in UK.

When I bought it in 2007 it was %75 heavily rusted.

İt was ex rally car and abused too much.

İn 2015 I sold it at stage of primer finished, hust before painting because 8 years trying to find parts fed me up and sold it for good price.

After that I decided to buy nex classic vehicle which should be rust free, no serious accident, not major engine, gearbox or differential problem.

I have very good mechanical knowledge and skills to do diy repairs weekends.

But I have no patience to wait a garage for rust repair and respray.

Electrical problems will not be a problem unless needing replacement parts which is rare on the market.

İn my country spare parts for Jaguar / Daimler is a problem, my only option to buy from online web sites / auction site.

I read buyers guide in sticky post.

Suslension overhaul, replace all coolant and fuel hoses, overhaul brakes, brake calilers, brake pipes ls not a problem. Fixing minor oil leaks from engine, differential also is not a problem.

1- rust free
2- not involved major accident
3- no major engine, gearbox, diff problem
4- above avarage interior and exterior condtion.

Can anyone advise to me what is right price I expect to pay according to my information given above?

The perfect person for an old Jaguar V12

I can't say. Not enough of them change hands to establish a market value, it seems.

A Series III V12 is a rare thing in the USA ....a few immigrants from Canada or Germany....so just finding one for sale can be a challenge. I know a few ultra-perfect examples have gone for $25-$30K but I've seen fair/average examples go unsold for $5000. So many have been neglected; it's hard to find a buyer willing to take on the challenge.....doubly so if the cosmetics are bad.

For a decent DIYer they make a great hobby car. Well worth the effort to bring them back to good condition. I use mine as a daily driver. It puts a smile on my face every day.

Cheers

Here are two links to SIII v12 auction results. The site, Bring a Trailer, generally lists US cars. Be sure and go all the way to the bottom of each page and read all the comments in chronological order. You will get an excellent overview of the condition of the car being sold.

I have found that it basically comes down to 3 factors. (1) The condition of the car. (2) How motivated the seller is (settling estates usually means they are in a hurry). And (3) how much it is worth to the buyer.

By all means, buy the best one you can afford and don't be in a hurry - wait for the right one to come along. Like Doug said, v12s are pretty rare in the US. Maybe in the UK there are more available. If you are adventuresome, buy an XJ6 and convert it to a v12. There are tons of 6 cylinder examples available in every condition and price range. As for parts, almost all of us have to order our parts via the internet or over the phone. In the US there are only a handful of parts houses with vintage Jaguar parts and none of them are close to me.

Try exclusiveclassiccarsltd.com in Staffordshire UK.
They have two Double Sixes with v low mileage and one owner. Imported (probably from Japan but not specified).
Not cheap but they look like really nice cars.
Good luck with your search...

Wow. Two beautiful cars with extremely low mileage. I would say the asking price around $20k US doesn't sound out of line at all. If I was in the market I would ****** one of these up and get it on the boat before Brexit the end of October.
