Car Number
Car anyone tell me what the car number on my 1978 XJ12 relates to? I can find out if it provides any further information about the vehicle. The car has been resprayed a few times by the looks of the body and i want to find out the original colour plus the code for the red leather, can anyone help?
Hi Mate,
A very vague question gets very vague to non existent responses.
Which numbers are you referring to?
Vin# ?
Chassis# ?
Engine# ?
Some number etched in by a previous owner?
1978 puts you in Series Two territory if you have an XJ6
Trim details can be in a different place to engine / chassis numbers.
Jaguar Daimler Trust in England have a service for a fee which will give you all known information about your car based on the numbers that you provided them.
Cheers,
Nigel

Hi Nigel,
You are right! The Body Number confuses me as i cannot find any information relating to what it means. I can find the information for the VIN number and i have the Engine & Gearbox numbers but the body number i am hoping will confirm the paint colour at least.

As far as I know the body number was for Jaguar internal purposes only. On my various Jags it has been on a tag affixed to the body behind the rear bumper.
I strongly suspect this was simply used to identify the car at various stages of (in)completion as it went down the assembly line. I think the actual, legal VIN tag was installed at or very near the end.
Paint and trim information is usually on a separate tag apart from the legal VIN or ID tag. On my Jags it has been in the engine bay on the RH inner fender or on a label attached to the body in the LH door post area, near the door hinges, or elsewhere in the LH door jamb. This is simply that varied over the years and perhaps by market as well
Cheers

+1 to what DD says.
Suggest [lufc12345] that you download the service manual - IIRC, first section contains "Vehicle Identification" which shows the location and content of all such tags. Take care you note variances for different markets (eg you are looking for US or NA) which in more recent years point to "A" and "B" pillars instead of engine bay.
There is a breakdown of the VIN# meanings to decode all the coded build data - but care must be taken to ensure this is decoded against the correct MY for your car.
As Doug says, neither the VIN#, Body#, nor any of the Powertrain#s give any clue to paint and trim combinations. These are generally 3-letter codes which may change from year to year or Series 1, 2, or 3. On all Jaguars I have owned from these years of later classics and more recently, paint and trim codes are on a metallized adhesive label titled something like "JAGUAR CARS, COVENTRY"also showing VIN#, which is stuck onto door pillar as above. Of course, my cars are ROW rather than NA.
Once you have the paint and trim codes, post them here if the recommended manual download does not have the decode charts. Some eras of paint and trim codes can be quite ambiguous.
Cheers,

Ken
