Default Do I need the charcoal canister? 85 xj6

I don't have a charcoal canister it seems to run fine without it. what do I need to do with the open hoses by the passanger wheel? plug them off, connect them together, take valve out or leave it there. right now everything is open to the air.

It will run fine without it, but you might want to add a small air filter on the end of the one that goes back to the tanks, and extend the hose so the add-on little filter can be under the hood.

The fuel tank draws in air as the fuel is depleted, through the hose with the valve in it, so leaving the hose open could allow mud to plug the hose and collapse the tank due to lack of venting.

You could remove the valve or puncture the diaphragm inside with a pokey tool to ensure that it cannot cause a tank collapse if the valve were to stick closed.

The best solution is to just get a replacement canister from a junkyard or david boger at everydayxj.com and make sure the valve works by testing it with a vacuum pump and blowing through it. You will probably notice gas fumes without the canister, and it is less environmentally friendly to run without one.
